Varsity Volleyball Coaching Position Goes to Ernest Banaag

Ernest Banaag, who previously worked at Mayfield Senior School for four years, was announced as the varsity volleyball head coach in February.
“I have high expectations for our entire program,” said Athletic Director Stephanie Contreras. “Ernest and I want this program to be the best in the Mission League and be the team to beat. I am extremely excited to have Ernest as our head coach; he is full of energy and has so many great attributes.”

Banaag is in charge of the entire volleyball program and is helping to hire lower level coaches. He is using his
12 years of experience of coaching both club and high school teams to help in the process.

“I want to make the program better – but better doesn’t always mean winning. I want to keep the traditions that have made this program successful and make new ones that will be beneficial,” said Banaag.

Athletes are already going to two-hour practices two days a week in preparation for the summer and fall.

“We are doing a lot of conditioning,” said senior Jessica Martin. “He wants us to be in shape. He isn’t as concerned with us practicing with the ball yet because a lot of us are also playing club.”

With a new coach comes a new schedule, practice drills and expectations. “Many of the girls aren’t used to his coaching; one girl even threw up during practice. He pushes us to our limits,” said Megan Bacall ’15, who has had Banaag as her club coach. “He expects us to give 100%.”

Many hope that the new staff will help the varsity team exceed last year’s record of 3-7 in league. —Anna Liebelt
