College Counseling: Program Overview

The process of applying to college can be both fulfilling and exciting for you and your daughter, offering an opportunity to gain greater insight and clarity into her personal values, goals and decision-making style. The college counseling staff partners with each family to encourage, equip, and empower students in their college process.

  • Ninth Grade

    In 9th and 10th grades, students prioritize their academic skills and involvement in FSHA activities, with the guidance of their grade-level counselor. They begin to use Scoir, our college counseling software, and learn about different types of colleges, majors, and careers. Finally, they are encouraged to develop a personal admission testing plan, and make productive use of their summers.
  • Tenth Grade

    In 9th and 10th grades, students prioritize their academic skills and involvement in FSHA activities, with the guidance of their grade-level counselor. They begin to use Scoir, our college counseling software, and learn about different types of colleges, majors, and careers. Finally, they are encouraged to develop a personal admission testing plan, and make productive use of their summers.
  • Eleventh Grade

    Students transition to their college counselors in the second semester to more fully embark on their college exploration and application journey. College counselors encourage students to discover their passions which can inform their college environment and major choices, thus allowing for a more personalized and intimate college selection journey. College counselors introduce students to exploration tools to help in their college search and applications including mentorship in writing their college essays.

    During junior year, students will participate in the following:
    • Take PSAT and mock SAT/ACT
    • Juniors are invited to participate in the college representative visits on our campus
    • College counselors begin to meet with students and families
    • Individual family meetings are scheduled with college counselors
    • Parent college counseling meeting for all Junior families
    • Individual college guidance appointments are scheduled with college counselors following the parent college meeting
    • College tours
    • Students and parents are urged to attend local college fairs
    • Junior questionnaire is assigned
    • Participate in small group meetings with college counseling staff




  • Twelfth Grade

    College counselors serve as mentors to students as they solidify their college lists, complete applications, and write essays. Students receive advice and information regarding colleges, deadlines, strategies, financial aid and more. In our program, students find their “best fit” colleges in which they will continue to grow personally, academically, and spiritually.

    During senior year, students will participate in the following:
    • Parent college counseling meeting for all Senior families
    • Retake SAT and/or ACT 
    • Students and parents are urged to attend local college fairs
    • Interact with college representatives that visit Flintridge Sacred Heart Academy during the fall 
    • Regularly meet with college counseling staff individually and in groups 
    • Workshops/meetings to assist students and families with the financial aid process
    • Application workshops
    • Essay workshops and support
    • College tours
    • Interview preparation
    • EA, ED, and RD strategies
